1. Rough nights will come back
Even after CBT-I, there will be nights you don’t sleep well: stress, travel, being sick, a change of season. Sleep naturally shifts a little, so a rough patch doesn’t have to mean treatment didn’t work.
What matters is what you do next. As Part 01 described, what keeps insomnia going is often what we do afterward to try to get sleep back.
2. A few days is different from a few weeks
| A brief wobble (lapse) | Insomnia settling back in (relapse) | |
|---|---|---|
| How long | A few days | A few weeks or more |
| Usual trigger | A clear event | Continues after the event has passed |
| What to do | Keep your wake time and carry on as usual | Reach for the three steps below, and get in touch if needed |
3. Three things to reach for first
- Keep your wake time, especially after a bad night.
- Stop trying to make up sleep. No going to bed early, sleeping in, long naps, or weekend catch-up.
- If you’re lying awake, get up. Bring back the agreements from Part 03.
If it continues for more than one to two weeks, keep the sleep diary (Part 02) again for a week, then contact your therapist and re-match your time in bed together, as you did before. Never below 5 hours.
4. When to get in touch
- Sleep hasn’t come back after 3–4 weeks of using the three steps
- Your mood drops sharply along with your sleep, or you feel unusually energized despite sleeping less
- A new sleep problem shows up (heavy snoring, pauses in breathing, uncomfortable legs, and so on)
- If you’re having thoughts of wanting to die, don’t wait. Call or text 988 right away, or call 911 if you are in danger.
Coming back is walking a path you already know, so it’s often easier than the first time.
