1. Pain, stress, and sleep can interact

Pain can lead you to brace or move cautiously. Appointments, reduced work, and explaining your pain can add stress. Stress may make pain harder to bear, while pain brings more tension.

Pain can disrupt sleep, and insufficient sleep may increase next-day pain. These connections do not establish stress as the cause of your pain. Your physical condition and the demands of daily life both deserve attention.

2. Starting with your surroundings

Focusing inside the body can make pain or anxiety more noticeable for some people. You can choose something less demanding, without making yourself become calm.

  • Keep your eyes open and gently notice the colors or shapes of nearby objects.
  • Listen briefly to an outside sound or familiar music. Stop if orienting to your surroundings also feels uncomfortable.

3. Breathing within your comfort

If attention to breathing feels comfortable, choose a position that respects your physical limitations and breathe normally. You might soften an exhalation if that feels easy. No large breaths, fixed pace, or breath-holding are needed. Leaving your breathing unchanged is also an option.

Stop if you feel dizzy, short of breath, more anxious, or more pain, or if difficult memories come up, and return to ordinary breathing. You do not need to close your eyes or examine painful areas. Shift attention to an object or sound, or skip the exercise.

4. More than a change in pain

Pain may stay the same after a pause. Consider whether the experience felt comfortable, tiring, or worth repeating. You do not need to persist with an uncomfortable technique.

Resting, changing position, or listening can sit alongside medical care and help with sleep problems. Respect existing physical restrictions.

A brief reflection

If you wish, which way of taking a brief pause seems least demanding today?
