ChatGPT로 상담을 대신해도 될까?Can ChatGPT Replace Therapy?

목차On this page ▾
GPT doesn't judge you morally. It organizes your feelings quickly, and it's there at 3 a.m. If you wonder whether it's worth paying a lot of money to see a professional, I understand. Many people are already telling AI what's on their minds.
Even so, I don't think today's general-purpose chatbots, like ChatGPT or Claude, are appropriate as a replacement for therapy. Below, I keep what the research says separate from my own view, and add some practical tips for people who use AI for emotional support.
Why people turn to AI
The biggest strength of AI therapy is that there's no person with limits on the other side. It's open around the clock. There's little or no cost, no waitlist, no stigma, and you don't need anyone nearby who can listen in Korean. Above all, you don't have to wonder, "Am I being a burden?"
Seeing a therapist means finding one, paying for it, waiting for an appointment, and then telling a stranger things you may never have said out loud. AI lowers those barriers a lot. When you can't sleep, or feel bad bringing the same story to a friend again, you can just open your phone.
That's an enormous amount of access. For many people, the real comparison isn't "AI therapy vs. real therapy." It's "AI therapy vs. nothing." I don't deny that some people find comfort, or a way to sort out their thoughts, in those conversations.
What the research says so far
In a Pew Research Center survey of 5,119 US adults in February 2026, 49% said they had used AI chatbots like ChatGPT, and 10% said they use chatbots for emotional support or advice. The share is higher among young people. In a nationally representative RAND survey of 1,009 Americans aged 12 to 21 in November 2025, 19.2% had asked an AI chatbot for mental health advice when feeling sad, angry, nervous, or stressed (McBain et al., 2026), up from 13.1% in a similar survey a year earlier.
Users mostly rate it well. Among young people who asked AI for advice, 42.8% did so at least monthly, and 91.7% said the advice was somewhat or very helpful. But that's how helpful it felt to them, so the survey can't tell us whether anyone's symptoms actually improved.
Some studies have looked at treatment effects directly. In the Therabot trial (Heinz et al., 2025), 210 US adults with clinically significant depression or anxiety symptoms, or at high risk for eating disorders, were randomly assigned to four weeks of Therabot or to a waitlist. At the four- and eight-week assessments, the Therabot group showed greater improvement in depression, anxiety, and eating-disorder-risk symptoms than the waitlist group. That's a meaningful result. But the chatbot was a research system built by experts for this purpose, different from the ChatGPT most of us use. It was compared with a waitlist, not with human therapy, and the study didn't establish long-term effects.
A 2026 feasibility trial by Kuta and colleagues studied people who weren't seeking treatment. Both the specialized-chatbot group and the general-ChatGPT group improved more on depression than the control group, with no significant differences on other outcomes. Cachia and colleagues (2026) studied college students' well-being. None of the studies I reviewed directly tested whether AI can replace a human therapist.
In a November 2025 health advisory, the American Psychological Association recommended against relying on generative AI chatbots or wellness apps to deliver psychotherapy. It left room for supportive uses, and recommended talking with your clinician about it, watching for dependence, isolation, or changes in behavior, and protecting sensitive information.
The "no limits" loop
I think the real difference between therapy with AI and therapy with a person comes down to limits. AI doesn't get tired, and it never finds your story too much. Much of the appeal I described above comes from that.
But as I see it, much of what human therapy offers comes from there being a person with limits on the other side. A therapist has a set hour, has tired days, and responds to what you say in their own way. You bring yourself out in front of someone with limits, and it turns out to be bearable. Going through that friction, a sense can form that "I'm someone another person can hold."
So "no limits" is AI's greatest strength, and at the same time its most fundamental limit. That can create a somewhat cruel loop. If you avoid people because you're afraid of being a burden and go to AI instead, AI can't even touch that fear, because it isn't someone you could burden. So that exact fear is the one most likely to stay where it is.
The harder it is to lean on people, the more comfortable a tool that never asks you to may feel. So it's worth noticing whether more time with AI means less conversation with people. That's also why it stays with me that, in the RAND survey above, 63.3% of young people who asked AI for mental health advice hadn't told anyone. The APA advisory's call to watch for dependence and isolation reads to me in the same light.
"No limits" is AI's greatest strength,
and at the same time its most fundamental limit.
A conversation partner that leans your way
Part of therapy is facing uncomfortable truths together. Sometimes that includes seeing the ways we hurt someone in a relationship. But AI is structurally inclined to take the user's side. Research has documented a tendency for language models to lean toward agreeing with users, called sycophancy. Sharma and colleagues observed it across several AI assistants and reported that training on the answers people prefer sometimes traded accuracy for agreement (Sharma et al., 2025). Empathizing with you while also naming your avoidance, saying the uncomfortable thing that needs to be said: I think that happens best inside a relationship.
If there's an answer you want to hear, AI can hand it back to you very smoothly. People who can tolerate it when AI says something they didn't want to hear will probably still use it well. Others may keep rephrasing the question until they get the answer they wanted, using AI to their own taste. That AI can reinforce a user's self-centeredness is one worry, and it matters more the more we use AI to understand and decide things about our relationships.
There's a worry in the opposite direction, too. Some people can't believe kind words no matter how many they hear. When they use AI, they may keep finding negative readings of themselves and deepen their self-blame. I suspect this happens less often than the first case.
Either way, when you use an off-the-shelf GPT or Claude for emotional support, you can end up more firmly inside the story you already believe. We often don't know what we don't know. That's why I think another person offering a perspective you hadn't considered is different from using AI with questions shaped by the perspective you already have.
Privacy, and who is accountable
BAA(Business Associate Agreement)는 그 정보를 맡아 처리하는 업체의 의무를 정하는 계약이다. In the US, health care providers covered by HIPAA, and the vendors who handle their data, are obligated to protect health information. A BAA, or Business Associate Agreement, is the contract that sets out a vendor's obligations. Therapists also have confidentiality duties under state law and professional ethics, separate from HIPAA. But what you tell a consumer chatbot yourself isn't protected by HIPAA. Ordinary accounts, such as ChatGPT Free, Plus, or Pro and Claude Free or Pro, don't come with a BAA, and paying for a plan doesn't change that.
The conditions under which conversations are used to improve models differ by service. OpenAI says it may use conversations from individual accounts for training and offers a setting to opt out. Since 2025, Anthropic uses Claude conversations for model improvement if you allow it. Whether your chats are used for training, whether you delete them, and how long the company keeps data are separate questions. Even with every setting checked, you're still leaving your most private stories on a company's servers.
If you act on an algorithm's advice and the result is bad, or even fatal, who is responsible? In the US, families have sued AI companies after teenagers died by suicide following conversations with chatbots. In Raine v. OpenAI, filed in 2025, the parents allege that ChatGPT contributed to their son's death; OpenAI has denied responsibility. In Garcia v. Character Technologies, the court was notified of a settlement in January 2026 and closed the case in June, without ruling on liability. What's in these lawsuits are allegations, and in the sources I reviewed I found no judgment establishing that a chatbot conversation caused a death. Still, it's worth asking how realistic it is for one person to sue a giant tech company.
Regulation is only beginning. In Washington, a law requiring AI companion chatbots to disclose that they aren't human and to have protocols for responding to suicide and self-harm (ESHB 2225) takes effect January 1, 2027. Still, it's hard to know how much clinician-level ethics training and review goes into development, and data protection, user protection, and "jailbreaking" (users getting around safeguards to draw out unsafe answers) remain open problems. I support the development of good AI. I don't think current LLMs are appropriate for therapy. I hope more people can reach better care, and I'll keep paying attention to the ethical problems and potential harms of AI therapy.
If you use AI for emotional support anyway
Some nights, AI is the only thing available. If you use it, here are a few things worth keeping in mind.
Settings > Data controls > "Improve the model for everyone", Claude는 Settings > Privacy > "Help Improve our AI models"예요. Check your training settings and turn them off. In ChatGPT, it's Settings > Data controls > "Improve the model for everyone." In Claude, it's Settings > Privacy > "Help Improve our AI models." This doesn't undo training that has already happened, and even after you opt out, sending thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback can allow that conversation to be used. Turning off training is also separate from deleting your chats.
Don't enter information that identifies you, like your name, address, workplace, or contact details, and don't enter diagnoses or therapy or medical records. When you talk about someone else, leave their details out too.
If you notice you're asking the same question in different words, pause. Ask yourself whether you're asking until you get the answer you want, or picking out only the harshest reading of yourself.
Don't make big decisions, like leaving a job, ending a relationship, or moving, on AI advice alone. Talk to at least one person first. And if AI talks as if it's diagnosing you, that still isn't a diagnosis.
If it helped you sort out your thoughts, try bringing what you sorted out to someone you trust, or to a therapist. If you're already in therapy, tell your therapist you're using AI.
If you're having thoughts of suicide or worry you might hurt yourself, call or text 988 in the US rather than turning to AI. For Korean-language support, call 988 and say, "Korean interpreter, please."
If there's something that felt easier to tell an AI than a person, we can talk about it together in therapy.
